1. heat a pot at medium heat, then coat bottom with 1 tbsp of olive oil. add yellow onion and saute for 5 minutes.
  2. add black pepper, cumin seeds, and turmeric powder.
  3. add carrot, potatoes, and green cabbage. mix well, lower heat, cover and cook for 5 to 7 minutes.
  4. mix in red lentils and chicken stock. mix well, and bring to a boil. lower heat to a simmer, cover, and cook for 10 minutes.
  5. season to taste with salt and serve over rice.
